Foaling Watch Update: Surprise in Final Stretch, Dyana Steady, and How Weather Can Trigger Labor
Daily Progress:
🐴 My Audubon – Day 306 – No updates today.
🐴 Lady Dyanaformer – Day 326
Dyana’s milk test still reads around 65 ppm, meaning there’s a 98% probability she will NOT foal within the next 24 hours. We included a video of today’s test for those following along!
Last night, she had a few restless moments, which is completely expected at this stage. She did end up laying down for her deep REM sleep around 4:45am. Her hind legs are a bit stocked up, which is also normal and aligns with how she progressed in the days leading up to foaling last year.
🐴 Elusive Surprise – Day 333
Surprise’s milk test exceeded 200 ppm last night, so we are no longer testing—she is officially in the foaling window!
🔹 Her hind end is extremely soft
🔹 No clear waxing on the udder yet, but more fullness
🔹 Restlessness overnight – licking her stall walls, shifting weight, and passing a lot of gas
With her calcium levels now past 200 ppm, the probability of foaling is:
✔️ 84% within 48 hours (which started last night)
✔️ 98% within 72 hours
We’re keeping an especially close eye on her now!
Weather & Its Impact on Foaling
Today brought a major temperature drop, high winds, and light rain off and on for the past 24 hours. This type of barometric pressure shift is known to play a role in triggering foaling, as mares often respond to environmental changes by going into labor.
Due to the icky weather, we decided to keep all the mares in their stalls today—which also makes it easier to monitor them closely. With Surprise progressing and Dyana following a similar pattern to last year, we’re officially on high alert.
Stay tuned for more updates—we could have a foal very soon! 🐴✨
