Foaling Preparation: Straw Bedding Added for Surprise

If you’ve been watching the live feed, you may have noticed we added straw to Surprise’s stall—and that means we’re getting close!

Why Straw?

Her milk test came back above the calcium threshold, a key indicator that foaling is approaching. Straw is the preferred bedding for foaling because:
✔️ It provides a soft, cushioned surface for both mare and foal
✔️ It’s less likely to stick to a wet newborn compared to shavings or sawdust
✔️ It allows for better traction when the foal tries to stand for the first time

While we’ve added straw, we still have the Airlite cardboard bedding underneath for extra absorbency and comfort.

More Signs We’re Getting Close

Another big reason for the bedding change? Surprise’s hind end is noticeably softening around her tailhead. As foaling nears, the muscles and ligaments in this area loosen significantly, allowing her pelvis to expand for delivery. This is one of the last physical changes we expect before labor begins.

With these changes happening, we’re officially on high alert. Keep an eye on the live feed—things could happen soon!
