Foaling Watch Update – March 3, 2025: Calcium Levels Can Fluctuate Before Foaling
Daily Progress:
🐴 Elusive Surprise – Day 332
🐴 Lady Dyanaformer – Day 325
🐴 My Audubon – Day 305
Calcium Testing Update
This evening, we tested mammary secretion calcium levels for both Surprise and Dyana, and the results show how much these levels can ebb and flow before foaling.
Surprise stayed about the same as yesterday, just over 100 ppm—a sign that her body is preparing, but she’s not quite in the final stretch yet.
Dyana’s levels actually dropped from where she was on Saturday (65 ppm) down to around 50 ppm today.
This kind of up and down movement is normal as the mare’s body adjusts to hormonal changes and milk production. While we often focus on calcium levels steadily increasing toward the 200 ppm threshold, they don’t always rise in a perfect linear fashion. Some mares will experience temporary dips before surging upward in the final days leading up to foaling.
pH & Other Signs
📌 Surprise’s pH remains above 7.2, another indication that she’s still progressing but not quite there yet.
📌 All three mares were comfortable and relaxed overnight last night, showing no signs of restlessness or active labor.
📌 Based on their current calcium levels, there is a 98% chance that neither Surprise nor Dyana will foal in the next 24 hours—but we’ll still be keeping a close watch.
We’ll continue monitoring daily and updating as things progress! Stay tuned. 🐴✨
