Learning Outside the Comfort Zone: Thirteen's Big Step
This special video from our partner farm, Horse Husband Stables, captures an important moment in young horse development — and a reminder of why rebuilding trust is just as important as teaching new skills.
Right before this video was taken, Kyle spent a training session helping Thirteen prepare for his first hoof trim later this week. The focus was on getting Thirteen more comfortable with having his legs handled.
Thirteen wasn’t too sure about the process. He expressed his discomfort by kicking out several times, but Kyle remained calm, patient, and consistent. As soon as Thirteen allowed his leg to be touched without resistance, Kyle immediately ended the session by removing the halter — rewarding the try without asking for more.
At the beginning of this video, you’ll notice Thirteen pawing at the ground and showing some tension in his face. Even when handled thoughtfully, stretching outside a young horse’s comfort zone can still leave them feeling a little unsettled.
That’s why reconnecting afterward is so important. In the video, Kyle shares how learning moments must be balanced with relationship-building — making sure the "emotional piggy bank" is refilled after any stress. Growth happens by stepping outside the comfort zone, but lasting trust comes from always prioritizing the relationship.
